Professional Activities:
Author of the book Adventures in Misplaced Marketing, Professor Rotfeld's research has been noted (among other things) for studies of the conventional wisdom about business theory and practice, assessing the validity of perspectives that are frequently repeated without question in textbooks. A respected scholar of advertising regulation and self-regulation, he was the recipient of the American Academy of Advertising's Outstanding Contribution to Research Award in 2000 and the Kim Rotzoll Award for Advertising Ethics and Social Responsibility in 2006. He is currently the editor of Journal of Consumer Affairs and serves on the editorial review boards of several other research journals. He first coined the term 'misplaced marketing' for essays and research discussing abuses, criticisms and omissions of marketing practice. His oft-quoted and cited essays in newspapers, magazines and academic journals -- discussions of the conventional wisdom of business education, comments on societal views of marketing practices and critical assessments of the nature of higher education and the nature of academic research -- have been reprinted in a variety of academic journals, magazines and books in several countries, and he has been invited to lecture on these topics before government organizations and at universities at home and abroad.
